So you’re going to a different state or country and want to know how the locals have fun? Not sure what there is to do in town or you want to join in on an event with others? Meetup.com allows you to do just that!

Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, such as politics, books, games, movies, health, pets, careers or hobbies. Users enter their postal code or their city and the topic they want to meet about, and the website helps them arrange a place and time to meet. (Wikipedia)

So here’s how it works!

  1. Create an account on http://www.meetup.com

  2. Enter the location/zip code of where you’re traveling

  3. Search for groups and explore their upcoming meetups

  4. Sign up for a group and RSVP to an event (Be sure to read the group rules and answer any questions required to join honestly)

Since I enjoy salsa dancing, I search the local meetups for salsa events and socials at my travel destination. I’ve participated in outdoor socials in downtown Santa Monica, socials in Toronto, and even a flashmob in Sydney overlooking the Opera House!

Lately as I’ve been traveling through Spain, I’ve participated in several language exchanges. It’s been very helpful for me to not only meet locals but to practice my Spanish in real conversations! I’ve surprised myself with how much I actually know.
